Kachin Tribe

      The Kachin or they call themselves is “Kim-Phor” migrate to Thailand from the Shan state in Burma, some groups migrated from Yunnan the People's Republic of China together with the Lisu and Lahu. They live together with that tribe that immigrated from the same time around 50 - 60 year ago. They immigrated only they group in 1974 at DoiLand, Mae-eye District, ChiangMai province and move to live in DoiVawee, Maesuay district, ChiangRai province, then migrate come to live at Pangmayao, Maimokjam, Mae-eye district, ChiangMai province before move come to stay at Baan NongKeaw when 25 ago. Kachin is closeness with Shan, Lisu, Lahu and Akha people because of are the same species language as Tibet – Burma

The history of Kachin tribe.

 The History of Kachin tribe.
         From the hearsay of the old man name “Boon-Choo” in Baan Nong-Keaw, ChiangDao, ChiangMai province. Around 200 more year, the Kachin tribe live in China . Then, the soldier of Mao Tse-tung have to revolution the Chiang Kai-Shek government cause the battle between the soldier of both side and the Kachin tribe spread in the group of Chiang-Kai-Shek soldier.

When the soldier of Chiang- Kai- Shek lose then, they flee to Thailand in the Mekong river, Chiang-Khong district Chiangrai province. The soldier of Chiag- Kai-Shek group that flees to Thailand has Kachin tribe too.

When they come to stay in Thailand , the Kachin people separate, scattered stay with Haw Chinese, Lahu and when the time passes, the Kachin people have to combination and come together to live in the public house at Baan Nong-Keaw project, Moo 14 Thambon MuangNa, ChiangDao district, Chiangmai province. Baan Maiphattana establishes 25 years ago but they come to stay in Thailand around 200 years. These villages have 60 household, 700-800 persons.

        The Kachin people there have believe after death that if die already will have sending soul of the dead person by “Tuem-Sa” go to reach nine crosses then “Tuem-Sa” direct the way go to. They believe in that if die already must go to stay in a city where that god prepare by have three city as a city for a person who dies usual, the second is a city for person who not good dead, die a violent death, die unusual etc. and the last one city is fire city or the hell, it is a city for the person who do evil when alive.

They will have an agent of a god for choose and examine each person that how much that they have the goodness comes to, if do evil will send to the hell, no go to born, will burn out at the hell.

The belief about the occurrence.

 
         When in the village has the new born, the midwife in a village comes to help in delivering a baby when deliver then must cut the umbilical cord immediately and a midwife will give the naming immediately because they believe in that must hasten name before a ghost because the ghost give naming a child before a person that will make a child have a short-live.

After naming finished they will have wrist tying gives a child, pound the “Ja-Tong-Tuay” by have the ginger, egg fish as pound and blessing to a child together. When finished give to the person who tastes and give blessing to a child too.

Belief about the water


          When they still respect in the original, there performing a ceremony is offer sacrifices to a spirit as water ghost for their have the water to uses all year, then have performing a ceremony “Sung-Hwa-Ka” that have the equipment to use in performing a ceremony is pig or sometimes also a chicken, but can not use black chicken must is red chicken and a male only the reason that be red because a god of kachin tell that. The god is a god who is the Kachin respect, as a topmost god of Kachin. The person who perform a ceremony is “Tum-Sa” and “Tum-Jong”, the villagers come to participates in performing a ceremony. They have the story about the water that “formerly, the god of Kachin order that do not cut the wood in 50 meter distances around a river area by have the order a dragon to takes care a river if have the person who go to cut the wood near a river will get into trouble about the natural disaster such as flood, the storm, born the disaster with the community or lack of the water, have no the water uses, that mean disparage or do not give honor to the river”

          The Kachin tribe call themselves that “Jim-Phor” because it is the name that they give themselves since they live in the People's Republic of China .

There have many groups of hilltribes lives together that make the leader can not distinguish the groups or the tribe of the hilltribes people, then tell each group goes to give their name. Kachin people then have consult and give their tribe name that “Jim-Phor” since that time.

          The Kachin people live in 2 provinces of Thailand as Chiang Mai and Maehongsorn province. In Chiangmai live in Baan Maiphattana (Kachin) Moo 14 , Thambon Muangna,ChiangDao district Chiangmai province, have the population around 800 peoples in 70 household.

        Court to young of Kachin tribe, there is the simplicity, have no strict. If they get along will chat indoor but not can not touch or molest. The Kachin teenager doesn't go out a house with the young man if she do not sure that young man is the person that she would like to marry and live together.

The inheritance and learning happen like people who have the knowledge will invite the person who would like to learn go to see when the patient has. When would will to take a medicine must tell the guardian spirit of the forest that will take a herb from the forest, then scatter milled rice round a herb from the left goes to right. After heal finished and the patient get well will take the herb that used already to leavings in the forest originally and tell the guardian spirit that person is get well, we take a herb returns, then scatter milled rice from right go to the left as the ceremony finish .
Massaging
           In Kachin tribe have the family name is” Uem-Kum” that have the knowledge about massaging. This family is that heals by massaging, heal the heel, squeeze the heel, in this family even have many “Uem-Kum” but will have a person who be able to do only one. Now start to difficult to seek this family that have the knowledge about massaging to heal the disease.

          The dressing of Kachin people as the same every age, have no difference. The man hat has wild boar tooth for protects an enemy to revere, it like as influential.

The Kachin woman dress, the shirt is black and has long hand arm, has the small ball as a silver decorates on the chest of shirt, the sarong, they weaves, pitch stripes by oneself, has the cloth anticipates the waist, has the stocking. Kachin people have belief about the silver ball that decorates in a woman shirt that it like as the ground that a man of Kachin people has fame to the woman because they believe in that if do not save one's face to a woman will do anything doesn't go up, the vegetables do not grow.

         The generality of Kachin family that is the medium-size has around 10 people live in one family. The man is the head of the family.

The festival and yearly ceremonial

1. The ceremony about cultivating for example before plant has will begging for blessing or notify to ancestor that give take care the farmland, do not give animal or obstruction land from the insect come to planting crops. The ceremonies have to kill a pig, a chicken to use in performing a ceremony. They will have ceremony like begin transplant rice seedlings grow, before ready to harvest will arrange perform a ceremony to eat new rice that make for a ghost or ancestor as harvest rice comes to roast and pound give to ancestor before do anything with the rice that they have. “Tuem-Sa” will be a person who performs a ceremony by have the equipment such as dry-cooked rice half unripe, pounded unripe rice “Hmee”. They have to wrapping to give to other person who not comes to attend the ceremony. They believe in that must give the rice to the other eats before them that will make them have effective compensate that plentiful later more. Thereafter they will harvest everything that grows, after harvest finished will have a great ceremony as “Ma-Naw” dance give to ancestor, kill cow, buffalo. If effective produce plentiful, sometime the village will arrange the ceremony for every household or individual.
2. The ceremony in the house or a village. When have often ill, a black magician or “Tuem-Sa” will cast lot to see that thing happen in a village, what is the god wants? They will perform a ceremony to solve with the thing that the god wants. The majority will have the ceremony about solve the bad thing, evil with animal blood. The black magician will fixes the place that will raise the ceremony.
3. The ceremony in the district. The pets that feed get into trouble often, the wild animals comes to a village, pets dies that they will have performing a ceremony, has the respect in the earth god that they must notify to the earth god that if get into trouble will perform a ceremony dig a hole and kill a chicken and young cow (beautiful red) female chicken is red. When they kill finished then bury all over, have not taking meat to eat and take a big piece of stone comes to overlay. If who eat that meat will died, regarded that is as filling bad disease (evil) that do not spread in the community, bury everything with the earth and a stone. After that everyone will under interdiction in a village 7 days, nobody goes out to work in a farm or go out the village to anywhere else. Everybody don't go out outside a village, do not enter the forest to kill animal. After finished this ceremony is regarded as every problem has ended already.

There have two door, the front and backyard door. They will have the shrine that in front of the entrance room. The shrine is the holy thing that the Kachin people respect and prohibit to touch or break anyway.

          The Kachin tribe or “Jim-Phor” have 7 fields which each the group will use the language that resembles but opposite. The Kachin tribe uses the language of “Jim-Phor” group to be the main that use to communicate because every group understands.     The Kachin people strict in a precept that they have in the village as the people in the community or a person from the outside that comes to the community. When have the person who don't follow the precept must have performing a ceremony to ask apologizes that break by know or don't knows by the prohibition such as
- Do not enter to the house from the door backyard must enter to the house from the in front only
- If the person who would like to send the bad news must enter the door backyard.
- Send good news must enter the in front door.
- Come too ask for marriage must enter to backyard door and when finish the asking for then must go out from backyard door.
- Can not entry to the front, then go out from the backyard door immediately by no rest.
- Do not entry backyard door, then go out the front door immediately.
- Do not ride a horse go to the village of because it like do not take a honor to a village must lead a horse to enter to the village except when have the person who get sick that can ride a horse but must have a person who leads also.

The important religious place.

 
“Ma-Naw” is the place that is the centre of mind of Kachin people, it is the place where use for dancing, the center of a people in the community. The people who enter to this place has the important prohibition such as

- Do not walk out when the show still not finished.
- Do not walk across at row when have the showing.
- Do not take the food enters to eat in this place.
- The dance person, do not brake the line or alternate the row because will make the ceremony imperfect.
- Do not drink the water, alcohol or smoke in this place.
This place is the place where the Kachin people respect. The people form the outside or from other place enter to the Kachin village if see this place must control themselves and take respect.

The social position and the culture of Kachin tribe.

          The Kachin tribe is the one of hilltribe people that respects with important position in the village. When has performing a ceremony in the village, they will give a well- informed or who have a position to perform a ceremony. The other people or the general person don't dare to do because it might be make a mistake which might affect bad evil with a person who perform a ceremony. The important position in the community of Kachin tribe such as

          •  The village leader or administration leader is “Tua” have to govern, take care , happiness and sorrow of the community and judge a case in community including communicate with the officer or the organization from the outside that comes to contact or coordinate activities with the community. Include have the power to making the decision and the problem that happen in the community as in the community gets into trouble “Tua” will have the power in making the decision anyway. If story is big cases “Tua” will call committee of the community comes to share in making the decision.

          •  The leader for praying in the ceremony or “Tuem-Sa” the person who has the duty in performing ceremony karma in the community such as offer sacrifices to the spirit. When the people in the community has a fever like to come to see “Tuem-Sa” for foretell the reason that make the person who have a fever and what they must do to get better. When know the cause of having a fever from the cause “Tuem-Sa” help perform a ceremony to cure the fever. The reward that “Tuem-Sa” will get when raise perform the ceremony as they kill a pig “Tuem-Sa” will get one leg or in the community has gone out to hunt animal and get the animal neither tiny or big, they will have distribution gives to “Tuem-Sa”and “Tua” With “Tuem-Sa” and “Tua” will help solve the problem when who have the trouble if who don't divide the pieces to “Tuem-Sa” and “Tua” when get into trouble happen “Tuam-Sa” and “Tua” do not come to help and solve the problem. The inheriting position “Tuem-Sa” will have no investigating follows an ancestor but be learning by oneself or come to beg for study with oneself. The person who take an interest will go to see for learn while there is performing a ceremony if in the normally day can not study.

          •  The assistant for praying leader in the ceremony or “Tuem-Jong”, has the duty to prepare the equipment for perform the ceremony like to make a convenience everything in performing a ceremony with “Tuem-Sa”.

Weaving

Weaving  
         Weaving or Kachin people have variety; mostly from they observe from the natural or florae such as vegetables, fruits and take it to embroidery.
Embroidery
         After weaving finished, they will take the clothes to embroidery many design that they will used the clothes when they rest from a farm.
Dying  
         Formerly, a color that can dye the cloth is from the nature such as the bark, leaf. The color that want to use can find from the natural “Hma-Ta-La” is the name of a tree that will take to use in dying cloth it have a gray color, “Maigood” tree take the bark comes to use in dying, the olive “Ja-Lun-Pi” will get black by use olive bark that decay then boil. The yellow get from “Uem-Lung”, red color get from “Sa-Nun” that is one kind of a tree which take the bark, brown color takes the tea leaves to boil.
Thread
         Thread from cotton “Pa-See” that they grow. Industrial Hemp “Hlee-Ji” comes to make a thread. Now the vegetation is very difficult to seek that they change to buy from the city. In the past they feed silk worm too.
